3. Active and Passive Construction

Salah satu pelopor fotografi yang paling umum adalah penemuan kamera obscura yang menjadi latar belakang dan alasan kemajuan teknologi fotografi saat ini. Obscura berasal dari bahasa latin dan berarti “ruangan gelap” berupa kotak dengan lubang kecil di salah satu sisi kotak. Yang sangat menarik dari kamera ini adalah fenomena fotografi yang hadir untuk menghasilkan gambar terbalik yang 'terbalik'. Penemuan fotografi bersinar ketika Nicephore Niepce berhasil membuat dokumentasi pertamanya pada tahun 1826 melalui proses paparan sinar matahari selama beberapa hari yang dikenal dengan proses Heliografi. Walaupun hasil dokumentasinya cukup kasar, Niepce terus mengembangkan eksperimennya dengan menggabungkan kekuatan dengan Louis Daguerre menggunakan proses yang mereka sebut 'Daguerrotype' sebagai proses fotografi pertama yang diterbitkan yang mampu menghasilkan hasil dokumentasi yang jelas dengan detail foto yang memuaskan. Proses fotografi ini diperkenalkan secara komersial pada tahun 1839 karena mampu membuat perubahan yang signifikan terhadap waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk menghasilkan foto yang hanya beberapa menit revolusi teknologi kamera Obscura ke era modern saat ini.
